It seems to happen all too frequently on today's highways: a tractor-trailer fails to slow down when traffic has stopped ahead. Truck accidents can cause devastation on the highways, many times involving multiple vehicles and high casualty counts. A recent accident on a New York highway is one example.
Traffic on the interstate was slowing for construction and merging into one lane. However, a tractor-trailer driver approaching the construction did not reduce speed in time and struck a pickup truck which was slowing in front of him. The pickup flipped at least four times before coming to rest in the median.
Meanwhile, the truck continued into the waiting traffic, crushing a van into the car ahead of it and killing one of the occupants of the van. The car was pushed under a second tractor-trailer, the force of which propelled that truck into a fifth vehicle. The occupants of the van and the vehicle under the truck had to be extricated. Among the injured were eight adults and one child. They were transported to various hospitals, some by Medivac.
Charges against the truck driver are pending the completion of the investigation. However, it is safe to say that this New York accident caused a great deal of pain and suffering. One family is mourning the death of a loved one, and others may be facing long recoveries with overwhelming medical bills. It is not surprising when the victims of truck accidents contact an experienced personal injury lawyer to guide them through the process of recovering compensation for their pain and loss.
