Woman files medical malpractice claim after crippling infection

When preparing for a routine medical procedure, it is common for patients in New York and elsewhere to feel a little nervous. After all, anytime people are sedated and their bodies opened for surgery, there is a risk of complications. Those complications are often preventable, and when patients are left with the devastating consequences of medical malpractice, they may seek compensation.

For some, compensation goes beyond simply sending a message or seeking justice. It may mean the difference between living at an acceptable standard and having no way to care for oneself. Such is the case for a woman in another state who went to the hospital to have a cyst removed from her ovaries. Following the surgery, she developed an infection that raged through her body, costing her both hands and the lower portion of both of her legs. She contends that the doctor cut into her bowel during the surgery.

The 46-year-old woman, who had been an intelligence analyst for the Department of Defense, now lives in a nursing home where she is spoon-fed and attended to. Her way of life has drastically changed. She will likely spend the rest of her years receiving specialized care, rehabilitation and expensive prosthetics.

The woman is suing her doctor for the millions of dollars it will cost her to receive that special care. Infections are a common complication after surgical procedures. If a doctor fails to take precautions against infection, patients may suffer life-changing or life-ending consequences. When this happens, those in New York are fortunate to have dedicated medical malpractice attorneys who will represent their interests in seeking the maximum compensation for their suffering.
