3 causes of summer driving accidents

It’s summer and you likely want to enjoy some time driving while the sun is out and the temperature is high. You may be making plans to travel across the country while sightseeing, or maybe you booked some time at a water resort. Whatever your plans may be, you don’t want a car accident to ruin your summer.

To help protect yourself from causing a car accident during the summer, you may want to avoid some of the simple mistakes others have made in the past. Here’s what you should know:

1. Driving with sandals

One way to beat the heat is to wear loose clothing. Instead of wearing socks and sneakers, you may be substituting in sandals. While these are a great way to stay cool, sandals could also be dangerous while driving. Sandals don’t provide the same friction that sneakers do and, as a result, may make it harder to press down on the brake to avoid an accident.

2. Wearing shades at night

Shades can make driving safer during the day. But, wearing them as the sun goes down could reduce your visibility and increase your chances of getting into a car accident.

3. Relying on cruise control

If you’re planning on driving for several hours, you may be tempted to turn on your cruise control. While cruise control can help you keep a constant speed, it may also work against you. Your cruise control may not immediately shut off if you suddenly need to stop your car during heavy traffic, which could cause a collision.

You may now know how to be a safer driver, but many other drivers won’t. You could still end up in a car accident, which could put a halt to your summer plans. If you’re injured by another driver, you may need to learn what options you have to receive compensation.
