4 common causes of garbage truck accidents

On Behalf of | Nov 14, 2017 | Truck Accidents

Garbage trucks are necessary for collecting trash and keeping neighborhoods clean. Unfortunately, these monstrous vehicles can also contribute to accidents. Due to the sheer size and weight of trash trucks, they can cause serious injuries when they hit passenger cars, pedestrians or bicyclists.

In fact, the United States Department of Labor keeps track of injuries caused by garbage truck accidents, and many of them are severe and fatal. But how exactly do garbage truck accidents occur? Here are some common causes of trash truck collisions.

1. Driver negligence

Drivers of garbage trucks may be negligent and be solely at fault for accidents. If a driver is distracted, impaired, fatigued or speeding, it can have severe consequences. These things may cause a driver to back up without warning or neglect to signal.

2. Falling debris or objects

Large vehicles that are hauling trash may have unsecured or oversized loads, causing debris to fall out. When a driver has not properly secured tools, these may fall on someone and cause an injury.

3. Poor vehicle maintenance

Garbage trucks require routine maintenance in order for them to operate safely. Whether the responsibility of maintaining the trucks lies with private companies, municipal entities or the drivers, sometimes it does not happen.

4. Failure to see cars or pedestrians

Just like other large vehicles, trash collectors and haulers have huge blind spots that make it difficult for operators to see things behind or next to them.

Collecting garbage is necessary for a clean and healthy society, but it does not mean this task is free of risks. Victims of accidents involving a garbage truck may have extensive medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other financial and physical damages. In these cases, it is crucial to seek compensation and hold the responsible parties liable. Depending on the situation, a person may be able to sue the driver, the trucking company or the city.
