Living in New York means you must deal with winter weather. Snow, ice, sleet and slush are all part of the landscape.

Unfortunately, these conditions can cause serious issues on the road. While most long-term residents are comfortable driving in the snow, ice is another story. Attempting to drive on icy roads presents several risks. If possible, it is best to avoid getting out during these times. However, keep these safety tips in mind if you can’t avoid driving.

Leave early and go slow

It is important to know your limits when it comes to driving on icy roads. Always exercise caution and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. It is always best to go slow and take your time in icy conditions. This is the best way to keep yourself and others on the road safe.

Don’t brake suddenly or quickly

You may skid while driving on packed snow or ice at some point. Your first instinct may be to panic, but resist the urge to slam on the brakes. This will not help the situation and may cause you to spin out or damage our vehicle. Try pumping your brakes slowly so your vehicle can come to a stop.

Leave plenty of space

Never tailgate in winter-weather conditions. While this is a good rule anytime you are on the road, it is especially important when driving on snow or ice. Give yourself plenty of room to stop or correct an error.

Steps to take if you experience an icy road accident

Accidents can still happen even if you are careful and follow all the tips. If you are in an accident caused by someone else, you may be able to recover compensation. Knowing your legal rights in these situations will help you know what to do next.
