How head-on collisions occur

On Behalf of | Oct 23, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Head-on collisions are the most serious type of crash. At high speeds, this type of collision is very likely to result in severe injuries and even fatalities. With a head-on collision, the speeds of both vehicles combine and the result is a major impact.

Recognizing some of the more common causes of this type of collision can raise awareness. Outlined below are some of the most common causes of head-on collisions

Careless driving

Head-on collisions are often caused by careless driving. For example, a vehicle may overtake before the driver has properly checked to see if anything is coming in the other direction. Or, the driver may overtake when there is no need to. Overtaking is necessary sometimes, but overtaking maneuvers must be performed carefully.

Distractions

Head-on collisions are not always the result of deliberate maneuvers. A driver may hit an oncoming vehicle due to crossing the centerline after becoming distracted. Some of the most common driving distractions include:

  • Using a cell phone
  • Being overly stressed
  • Arguing with passengers

It only takes a momentary lapse in concentration for a head-on collision to occur.

Vehicle malfunction

The driver is not always to blame for accidents. On other occasions, they may be the fault of the vehicle manufacturer or auto repair shop. For example, if a vehicle was fitted with faulty tires and strayed over the centerline and crashed, then the company tasked with fitting those tires may be liable.

If your accident was the result of another’s negligence, then you may be entitled to personal injury compensation. Seeking legal guidance will help to provide you with the information you need to make a claim.
