How implicit bias influences the diagnostic process

The human body is incredibly complex. A variety of different issues, from nutrient deficiencies to infections, can cause alarming symptoms. To effectively resolve those symptoms, people need to know what has caused them.

They rely on their doctors to properly diagnose what actually causes their symptoms so that they can access the best treatment available. Unfortunately, mistakes during the diagnostic process are somewhat common. They can have devastating consequences for patients. In some scenarios, doctors may make diagnostic mistakes because they let their personal biases influence how they practice medicine.

What is implicit bias?

How people evaluate individuals and circumstances depends in part on their personal history. The values of an individual’s household when they are or a child, the messages that they receive from popular media and even their prior experiences with people who share certain characteristics can impact their behavior in the future.

The medical professionals should cultivate awareness of their implicit biases to ensure that they don’t overlook certain symptoms or make inaccurate assumptions about their patients. Allowing implicit bias to undermine the diagnostic process could lead to unfavorable outcomes for patients due to a delayed diagnosis or undergoing treatment after a misdiagnosis. Patients who believe that a doctor’s bias affected their care may sometimes have grounds to pursue a medical malpractice lawsuit.

If other competent professionals could have diagnosed a patient correctly, a diagnostic error that causes them harm could constitute medical malpractice. Especially when bias affects the diagnostic process, patients may want to demand accountability from their physicians to not only recover their losses but also to help prevent similar issues in the future.
