How can runners stay safe near the road?

On Behalf of | Jul 17, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

One of the greatest risks that runners face, when considering their injury odds, is simply being struck by a vehicle. This could happen while they’re crossing over a driveway, running on the shoulder of the road or even using a crosswalk. Runners and other pedestrians face especially high risks from oversized pickup trucks and SUVs.

There is nothing that guarantees a runner won’t be injured in a motor vehicle accident. However, it’s important to understand what steps to take to decrease the odds.

Key safety tips for runners

If you’re going to be jogging this year and you know you’re going to be around vehicles, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • If you’re crossing in front of a vehicle, try to make eye contact with the driver.
  • Always focus on visibility, such as choosing bright clothing over gray or black.
  • If you’re running in the dark – or near dusk or dawn – consider reflective materials, LED vests or headlamps.
  • Be especially wary of cars that are entering or exiting the road, as these drivers may be more focused on traffic than pedestrians.
  • When running on the shoulder, be sure that you are facing traffic.
  • If sidewalks are available, use them instead of running on the road.

It can also help to try to avoid distraction. For instance, you may be tempted to wear headphones and listen to music while you run, but this makes it harder to hear the traffic around you.

Have you been injured?

Even if you do everything right, you could still suffer injuries due to a negligent driver. Make sure you know how to seek financial compensation for medical bills and other costs.
